Steelite International is a Stoke-on-Trent maker of commercial tableware, and its china is built for one job: high-turnover hotel and restaurant service. The body is vitrified, and in the Performance programme it is an alumina china fired dense and hard, so it resists edge chips, absorbs almost no water and survives the dishwasher, the stack and the occasional drop far better than domestic porcelain or earthenware. The range splits into two useful groups. Plain white lines such as Simplicity and Monaco White are the staples: neutral, stackable, endlessly re-orderable and the sensible foundation for any menu. Above those sit the characterful ranges (Craft, Terramesa, Vesuvius, Aurora and Ink), which give you colour, texture and a hand-finished look for a table with more personality. Steelite also owns Utopia, its glassware arm, so you can match tumblers, wine and cocktail glasses to the same order, and the wider family runs up to fine bone china (William Edwards) and handcrafted stoneware (Robert Gordon) for premium and more artisan tables.

When you buy, think past the first order. Decide whether you want plain white you can re-order for years or a decorated look you may need to protect with a little extra opening stock, because a reactive glaze can shift slightly between production runs. Match one body and shape family across the room so plates, bowls and cups stack and read as a set. What makes Steelite china tough enough for daily service?

Its Performance body is an alumina vitrified china, fired dense and hard so it resists edge chips and absorbs almost no water, which also keeps it hygienic. That density is what stands up to the knocks of plating, stacking and machine washing day after day, and the Performance range is backed by an edge-chip warranty (Steelite markets it as a lifetime warranty on the Performance body, so confirm the exact terms for your pattern). For a more refined table, Steelite also makes fine bone china (the William Edwards range) and alumina fine china (Anton Black), aimed at premium dining.

Which Steelite range should I choose?

Start with how the food is plated and how often you will re-order. Simplicity and Monaco White are plain white vitrified staples: neutral, stackable and the safest bet for long-term availability. Craft, Terramesa, Ink and the Vesuvius and Aurora reactive glazes give you colour, texture and a hand-finished feel for a more characterful table, but every piece varies slightly by design, so buy a little extra at the outset. Coupe (rimless) shapes read modern and give you more plating area, while rimmed plates frame the food and hide edge wear.

Is Steelite dishwasher and stacking safe for a commercial kitchen?

Yes. It is designed for commercial warewashing, and the vitrified body will not craze or take on water the way earthenware can. It is also built to stack, which matters when you are storing covers for a full banqueting room. Two honest cautions: any china will chip if you stack it carelessly or drop it onto cutlery, and the reactive-glaze, hand-decorated and metallic-trimmed ranges have their own care notes, so check the range before you put decorated or trimmed pieces through an aggressive cycle.

Does Steelite do glassware as well as china?

Yes. Steelite International owns Utopia, its glassware division, so you can match tumblers, wine, cocktail and rocks glasses to the same order (Barshine, Timeless and Diamond are examples you will see here). Buying the china and glass from one maker keeps your delivery and re-ordering in one place. Bear in mind the glass is a different material to the china, so the edge-chip warranty on the Performance china does not apply to the glassware.

Will I be able to re-order and match my Steelite next year?

Plain white lines like Simplicity and Monaco White are long-running and the safest to build a room around, because they stay in the catalogue for years and match batch to batch. Decorated and reactive ranges do get refreshed and occasionally retired, and hand-finished glazes vary slightly between production runs, so if a specific pattern is critical to your look, tell us and we will confirm it is a current, re-orderable line before you commit. Ordering a small buffer of open stock at the start saves you a mismatch later.

How quickly can I get Steelite, and do you hold stock?

It depends on the line. Lordwell holds some fast-moving lines in its own warehouse, and those can go out for next working day when you order before the daily cut-off. Most of the Steelite range, though, is ordered in from the manufacturer, so we confirm the lead time with you before you commit rather than promise a blanket next-day.
