Buying Smeg
Smeg is a family-owned Italian manufacturer from Guastalla in Emilia-Romagna, founded in 1948, and Smeg Professional is the arm that builds for commercial kitchens rather than domestic ones. What you are buying is Italian-built equipment across an unusually wide spread: warewashing, convection and combi ovens, professional refrigeration, hotel minibars, and, through La Pavoni, espresso. The thread running through it is that the machines are made to look right in a room people can see into, and every line in the 2026 range carries a 2 year parts and labour warranty as standard, which is a longer default than most of the market offers.
The range divides cleanly. Warewashing splits into Ecoline, which gives you 3 wash programs for straightforward bar and cafe work, and Topline, which steps up to 7 programs plus twin-basket and 600x500 tray formats for kitchens washing hard all day, with hood machines in both tiers and heavy-duty utensil washers above them. Cooking splits into ALFA convection ovens, from compact 435x320 tray models on a 13A plug up to 10 tray 600x400 machines, and Galileo combi steam ovens in 5 and 10 tray 1/1 GN. Refrigeration covers 700 and 1400 litre uprights, wine cabinets, and the FAB5 minibar, the 1950s-styled icon hotels build rooms around, in nine colours and both hinge directions.
Two things decide most Smeg installs, so settle them before you order. First, electrical supply: the compact glasswashers and small ALFA ovens run from a standard 13A socket, but the 500mm warewashers need a dedicated 30A single phase feed and the hood machines, utensil washers, larger ALFA ovens and every Galileo combi need three phase, so confirm what your board can carry and budget for an electrician. Second, water: an integral softener is offered on most glass and dishwashers as an S-suffix model, and in a hard water area that version is worth the difference because scale is what kills wash tank elements. Tell us the model and we will confirm the current lead time before you commit.
Smeg: common questions
What is the difference between Smeg Ecoline and Topline warewashers?
Ecoline is the essentials tier: 3 wash programs covering light to heavy soiling, in 400x400 and 500x500 basket sizes, undercounter and hood. It is the sensible choice for a bar or cafe washing glasses and crockery in steady volume. Topline steps up to 7 wash programs, which lets you match the cycle to delicate glassware or heavily soiled pans rather than compromising, and it adds twin-basket and 600x500 tray formats plus 600x500 hood machines for kitchens washing hard all day. Both are Italian-built and both carry the same 2 year parts and labour warranty, so the decision is about wash volume and control, not build quality.
What electrical supply does Smeg Professional equipment need?
It varies a lot across the range, and it is the single most common install surprise. The 400x400 glasswashers and the smaller ALFA ovens (435x320 tray models) run at around 2.75 to 2.9kW from a standard 13A plug, so they go anywhere with a normal socket. The 500x500 glass and dishwashers are 6.8kW and need a dedicated 30A single phase supply. The hood dishwashers, utensil washers, larger ALFA ovens and all Galileo combi ovens are three phase, ranging from 9.7kW up to 18.6kW on the largest utensil washer. Check the supply before ordering, and if you are unsure, send us the model and we will confirm what it needs.
Should I pay extra for the integral water softener version?
In a hard water area, yes. The S-suffix models have a water softener built into the machine, and it does two jobs: it stops limescale forming on the wash tank element, which is the most common reason a warewasher fails early, and it stops the white spotting that makes clean glassware look dirty. The alternative is plumbing in a separate external softener, which costs money, takes up space under the counter and is another thing to maintain. If you are in a soft water area the standard version is fine and the saving is real.
What is the FAB5 minibar and where does it suit?
The FAB5 is Smeg's 1950s-styled retro minibar, a 36 litre absorption unit that runs silently, which matters in a bedroom. It comes in nine finishes (black, cream, pastel blue, pastel green, pink, red, silver, white and a Union Jack) with left or right hand hinge, so you can specify it to the room layout rather than working around it. Hotels, serviced apartments and boutique guest houses use it as a design feature, because guests photograph it. It is a minibar rather than a kitchen fridge, so size it for drinks and snacks, not food storage.
What is La Pavoni and how does it relate to Smeg?
La Pavoni is a Milanese espresso marque founded in 1905 that has been part of the Smeg group since 2019. What we list here is its commercial side: 2 and 3 group automatic volumetric espresso machines with boilers from 7.8 to 21 litres, plus on-demand dosing grinders. The larger machines are 400V three phase, so check your supply, and the grinders run from a standard UK plug. Because it sits in the Smeg group, it carries the same 2 year parts and labour warranty and the same UK support route as the rest of the range.
Do you hold Smeg in stock, and how quickly can I get it?
Smeg Professional is ordered in from the manufacturer rather than held in our own warehouse, so we do not promise a blanket next working day on it. What we will do is confirm the real lead time on your exact model before you commit, rather than taking the order and telling you afterwards. If you have an opening date, a refit window or a machine that has failed, say so when you enquire and we will check availability first and tell you honestly whether it can be met, and what the nearest alternative is if it cannot.
