Buying Genware

Genware is a value own-brand built for everyday commercial service, so treat it as your workhorse range rather than your signature china. It covers a lot of ground: fully vitrified porcelain and Kava reactive-glaze stoneware crockery, melamine buffet bowls and platters in Gastronorm sizes, vintage steel and copper-plated serveware, acacia and hevea wood boards and trays, plus the bar and buffet accessories (crown risers, wire baskets, juice dispensers, relish servers) that dress a counter. If you run a cafe, pub, buffet, care home or contract kitchen and need front-of-house kit that works hard without tying up your budget, this is where most buyers start.

Buy Genware by material, because each one has a job. The porcelain is fully vitrified (fired dense, so it absorbs very little water), conforms to BS4034 (the commercial hotelware standard) and, thanks to its rolled edges and thicker rims, carries a 5-year edge chip warranty on many of the crockery lines: this is your everyday hot-food china. Kava is the reactive-glaze stoneware, with a rustic, hand-finished look (including 'raw wall' presentation plates left unglazed at the rim) that suits sharing plates and modern menus. Melamine is display and cold service only: it is light and very hard to break, which is why it dominates the buffet lines, but it must never go in an oven, microwave or under a hot lamp. Vintage steel, copper-plated trays and wood boards are presentation pieces for serving and dressing, not for cutting on or heavy heat. Match the material to how the piece is actually used and it will last.

Two practical checks save you money. First, sizing: much of the buffet melamine and many of the dishes are made to Gastronorm (GN 1/1, 1/2, 1/3), so they drop straight into standard counters, wells and racks, which is worth confirming against your own equipment before you order. Second, availability: value ranges get revised over time and individual lines do get discontinued, so if a particular bowl, plate or colourway is central to your table, buy enough at the outset and keep a note of the product code for re-ordering. It is far cheaper to over-order a coherent family (matching bowls, risers and platters) now than to hunt for a replacement pattern later.

Genware: common questions

Is Genware good enough for professional use, or is it too cheap?

It is a genuine commercial value range, not consumer homeware. The porcelain is fully vitrified, meets BS4034 (the standard for commercial hotelware) and carries a 5-year edge chip warranty on many of its rolled-edge lines, and the serveware is built for repeated service. What you trade at this price is the very heaviest-duty stacking life, the thickest bodies and the widest colour and shape libraries of top-tier super-vitrified brands like Churchill or Steelite. For high-turnover or budget-led settings (cafes, pubs, buffets, care homes, contract catering) it is honest, hard-working kit, and for most everyday covers it is more than enough.

Can Genware melamine go in the microwave, oven or dishwasher?

Dishwasher yes, microwave and oven no. Melamine is a display and cold-service material: it is light and near unbreakable, which is why it dominates the buffet lines, but heat damages it and it can scorch or degrade if microwaved or left under a hot lamp. Use it for bread, salads, desserts, cold buffet and ambient display. For anything hot or reheated, plate on the porcelain, Kava stoneware or steel instead.

What is Kava stoneware and what should I plate on it?

Kava is Genware's reactive-glaze stoneware, sold in dark grey, black and white with a raw, hand-thrown look (some plates leave the rim unglazed as a 'raw wall' edge). It suits rustic and modern plating: sharing boards, brunch, small plates and coffee service, with matching cups, saucers, teapots and chip cups in the range. Because the glaze is reactive, expect natural variation piece to piece, which is part of the character rather than a fault. It is dishwasher-safe and made for daily service.

Will Genware crockery chip in service?

Genware's porcelain is fully vitrified, so it is fired dense, absorbs very little water and stands up to commercial washing. The crockery is designed with rolled edges and thicker rims to resist edge chips, and many of the porcelain lines carry a 5-year edge chip warranty, so it is built for real service, not just display. Any china chips if you abuse the stack, so treat it like any commercial crockery: do not over-stack, use racks, and keep a few spares of your core plates so a chip never leaves a gap in the setting. If your site is exceptionally high-volume and hard on crockery, the heaviest-duty super-vitrified ranges give you more headroom, but for normal service Genware holds up well.

Does Genware buffet melamine fit standard Gastronorm counters?

Much of it is made to GN sizes (you will see GN 1/1, 1/2 and 1/3 in the product names and dimensions), so it drops into standard gastronorm counters, wells and racks. Always check the stated size against your own equipment first, because the buffet range also includes round bowls, conical 'Tableau' bowls and square platters that are sized on diameter rather than GN. Is Genware in stock for next-day delivery?

Some Genware lines are held in our own warehouse and ship for next working day when you order before the daily cut-off. Most of the range, however, is ordered in from the manufacturer, so we confirm the lead time with you before you commit rather than promising a blanket next-day. If a date matters (an event, an opening or a menu launch), tell us the deadline and the pieces you need and we will check stock and give you a firm turnaround before you order.
